Handy Tips For Adjusting Step Chains

Quick Assessment Method for Chain Tension
If the step chain emits a squeaking sound or appears to be skipping teeth, begin by pressing your thumb against the middle of the chain:

A deflection of 3–5 mm indicates the ideal state.

A deflection exceeding 8 mm requires immediate tightening.

If the chain cannot be depressed at all, it may be overtightened.

Much like testing a guitar string, the chain should exhibit a slight springiness and snap back into place quickly. Observe the gear engagement point; under normal conditions, the teeth should mesh at approximately two-thirds of their height. If a visible gap is present, the gear position must be adjusted simultaneously.

Tool-Free Tension Adjustment Techniques
When professional tools are unavailable, you can employ the following methods:

Gravity Positioning Method: After loosening the mounting bolts, allow the step to sag under its own weight into its natural resting position before retightening the bolts.

Coin Measurement: Use a 1-yuan coin as a feeler gauge to ensure that the clearance between the chain and the guide rail is equal to the thickness of the coin.

Reference Marking: Before making any adjustments, use chalk to mark the original position to facilitate accurate realignment.

Note: After each adjustment, manually rotate the steps through three full cycles to ensure that the tension is uniform across all sections and free of sudden irregularities.

Two-in-One Gear Maintenance Strategy
Addressing both the chain and the gears simultaneously helps extend their service life:

Use a toothbrush dipped in paraffin wax to clean accumulated dust and debris from the gear teeth grooves.

Apply a few drops of silicone-based lubricant to the chain once every quarter.

If the gear teeth tips appear to have become sharp or pointed, contact maintenance personnel immediately for inspection.

Inspect for any signs of rust or corrosion spots before and after the rainy season.

Regular maintenance-much like caring for a bicycle chain-will ensure that the steps operate more quietly and smoothly.
