Based on structural form, moving walks can be classified into step-type (resembling a slat conveyor), belt-type (resembling a belt conveyor), and dual-line types. To achieve parts commonality with escalators and ensure economic efficiency, a step-based structure and an identical handrail structure are frequently adopted. The handrail must operate synchronously with the moving treadway to ensure passenger safety. The operating speed, treadway width, and transport capacity of moving walks are generally comparable to those of escalators; typically, the maximum incline angle does not exceed 12°.


1. Classification by Handrail Decoration
1) Fully Transparent Type: Refers to moving walks where the handrail skirt panels are constructed entirely from transparent glass. Based on the shape of the glass used for the skirt panels, this category can be further subdivided into curved-glass and flat-glass types.
2) Opaque Type: Refers to moving walks where the handrail skirt panels are constructed from opaque metal or other materials. Since the handrail belt supports are anchored to the upper section of the skirt panels-allowing the handrail belt to execute its continuous loop along the guide rails-the opaque type offers superior structural stability compared to the fully transparent type. This design is primarily utilized for high-rise moving walks located in high-traffic areas such as subway stations, railway terminals, and ferry docks.
3) Semi-transparent Type: Refers to moving walks where the handrail skirt panels are semi-transparent-for instance, those utilizing materials such as frosted or translucent glass.
In terms of handrail aesthetics, fully transparent glass skirt panels possess a requisite level of structural strength (with a minimum recommended thickness of 6 mm). Furthermore, given their superior decorative appeal, moving walks featuring flat, fully transparent glass skirt panels constitute the vast majority of installations currently in use.


2. Classification of Moving Walks by Treadway Structure
1) Step-Type: Moving walks in which the treadway-the surface upon which passengers stand-consists of individual plates (steps) made of metal or other materials, featuring a grooved or serrated surface texture.
2) Belt-Type: Moving walks in which the treadway consists of a continuous steel belt covered with a protective rubber layer.
While belt-type moving walks offer exceptionally smooth operation, their manufacturing and operational costs tend to be higher. Consequently, they are typically reserved for long-distance moving walk applications requiring higher operating speeds. The step-type moving walk remains the most commonly encountered variety.
